How Is Ear Surgery Performed?

Your Consultation

The first step in your ear surgery process is a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Sina. During this meeting, he will listen to your goals and examine your ears. Before creating a potential surgical plan, Dr. Sina will also educate you on the risks and benefits of the procedure, as well as describe what you can expect from the results.

If you and Dr. Sina agree that ear surgery is right for you, he will make an appropriate surgical plan that incorporates the techniques used. He will then provide you with an accurate cost estimate and pre-surgical instructions.

The Ear Surgery Procedure

Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure and can be performed using general anesthesia or local anesthesia. This procedure can typically be performed in under two hours. Each surgical procedure will vary depending on the type of otoplasty performed, the patient’s anatomy, and the surgical plan, but the general steps are as follows:

  • Dr. Sina will place the incision behind the ear or inside its folds, reducing the appearance of scarring.
  • For ear pinning, he will place the incision behind the ear to remove excess cartilage and move the ear closer to the head. Additionally, sutures can be placed to create the natural folds of the ears if necessary.
  • Ear reconstruction may include a combination of the above techniques.

What Is Ear Surgery Recovery Like?

Immediately following ear reshaping surgery, your ears will be wrapped in a compressive dressing. Expect to feel drowsy from the anesthesia—you’ll need a responsible driver to take you home. Each patient is different, but a general ear surgery recovery timeline is as follows:

  • The surgical drain is removed after one day, while the compressive dressing is removed after day three.
  • A protective headband will replace the dressing and must be worn day and night for two weeks.
  • Skin sutures are removed after one week.
  • The headband is worn at night only for another two months.

When Will I See My Ear Surgery Results?

You can expect bruising to persist for about two weeks, along with some swelling. As these symptoms dissipate, you’ll be able to see the results of your procedure. The ears will be closer to the head without obvious protrusion, revealing a more natural-looking ear shape and contours. In any case, otoplasty patients are pleased with the results, and many adult patients only wish they had done it sooner.
