What Does a Facelift Do?

A facelift (rhytidectomy) goes beyond surface-level tightening by lifting and reshaping the foundational layers of the face, resulting in smoother, firmer features and a rejuvenated overall look. While often thought of as a way to tighten skin, modern facelifts—especially the deep plane technique—go beyond surface-level changes to address deeper tissue laxity. As we age, facial tissues lose elasticity and volume. A facelift releases and repositions the underlying SMAS layer (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System: the foundational layer of tissue beneath the skin that supports facial structure and expression) and removes or redrapes loose skin. When combined with a neck lift, it also refines the jawline and neck contours, resulting in a cohesive and rejuvenated appearance.

Facelift Benefits

Facelifts do more than smooth the skin—they help restore confidence by aligning your appearance with how you feel. Many patients describe feeling more vibrant, refreshed, and in tune with themselves. Benefits include the following:

  • More youthful, natural-looking facial contours
  • Improved jawline and neck definition
  • Reduction of jowls and sagging skin
  • Diminished smile lines and marionette folds
  • Restoration of mid-face volume
  • Results that age gracefully

Your Guide to Deep Plane and Other Facelift Options

Lower Facelift

This technique focuses on the jawline and jowls, making it ideal for patients seeking subtle, targeted rejuvenation without full facial surgery.

Facelift with Neck Lift

By combining facial lifting with neck tightening, we achieve a seamless transition between the face and neck. This is especially beneficial for those experiencing neck bands, loose skin, or submental fullness.

Deep Plane Facelift

This advanced method lifts and repositions the SMAS layer by releasing deep tissue connections. It allows for more substantial, longer-lasting rejuvenation without a “pulled” appearance. Ideal for those with moderate to advanced aging or prior facelifts that haven’t aged well.

Dr. Mehdi Sina's Extended Deep Plane Facelift

Not all facelifts are created equal. In order to reverse the signs of aging, a surgeon must first understand the aging process itself. Aging causes changes to the skin, superficial fat compartments, the muscles of the face, the deep fat compartments, and even the facial skeleton. The extended deep plane facelift is the only technique that allows a surgeon to address and reverse these changes in a natural and long-lasting way.

The difference between traditional facelifts, sometimes referred to as SMAS facelifts and an extended deep plane facelift is that traditional facelifts rely on tension or pulling, either of the facial skin, muscles, or both in order to “lift” the sagging tissues of the face. Many times, this can lead to an overly pulled, windswept or clearly operated on appearance. Additionally, these inferior techniques can distort or change the appearance of other facial features, namely the eyes and mouth. In contrast, the extended deep plane facelift fully releases and repositions the deeper tissues of the face to a more youthful position without tension on the facial skin or muscles. When performed by an extended deep plane facelift specialist like Dr. Sina, patients can expect the most natural and longest lasting results with minimal scarring.

The Facelift Procedure Overview

Step 1

General anesthesia is administered for comfort and safety.

Step 2

Incisions are made discreetly around the ears and possibly under the chin.

Step 3

The SMAS layer is released and lifted, and then repositioned, while excess skin is redraped or removed.

Step 4

Incisions are closed with meticulous suturing for minimal scarring.

Step 5

Recovery typically allows patients to resume normal activities and work within 7–14 days. As swelling and bruising subside, most patients return to social activities within two to three weeks. Results continue to refine over time and are designed to age naturally, leaving you looking rested, refreshed, and still like yourself.

How to Prepare for Your Facelift

Commit to a Nicotine-Free Window: Nicotine drastically constricts blood vessels, which compromises healing and increases the risk of skin loss. For optimal safety, you must stop smoking or using all nicotine products completely 6 months before surgery and maintain this throughout your recovery.

Pause Specific Supplements and Medications: To minimize your risk of bleeding and bruising, you will need to temporarily stop taking blood-thinning medications and certain over-the-counter supplements for at least two weeks before surgery. This includes fish oil, flaxseed oil, garlic supplements, and high-dose Vitamin E.

Maintain a Stable, Healthy Weight: Your facial anatomy and skin elasticity shift with your weight. We advise against sudden, restrictive diets right before your procedure. Arriving at surgery with a stable weight ensures your customized facelift plan aligns well with your natural contours.

When Will I See My Facelift Results?

Facelift results can be seen almost immediately, though bruising and swelling are expected in the days following surgery. As your face continues to heal, you’ll notice progressive improvements in the smoothness of your skin, the restoration of youthful contours, and the reduction of deep lines and skin laxity. Final results typically refine over several weeks to months, revealing a more refreshed, naturally rejuvenated appearance.

Why Choose Vegas Facial Plastics?

Dr. Mehdi Sina is double board-certified and trained in some of the most competitive institutions across the country, including a highly selective fellowship in facial surgery under industry-leading mentors in Manhattan, NYC. Beyond credentials, what sets Dr. Sina apart is his patient-first philosophy: educating every individual, prioritizing safety, and avoiding unnecessary procedures. At Vegas Facial Plastics, you won’t find pressure tactics or impersonal care. As a boutique, concierge-level practice, we provide direct access to Dr. Sina throughout the recovery process—ensuring you feel supported, cared for, and confident every step of the way.

How Much Does a Facelift Cost?

The cost of a facelift in Las Vegas can vary based on the complexity of your personalized surgical plan. One of the primary factors influencing the final price is the duration of the procedure—since both the surgical facility and anesthesia services are typically billed by time, more extensive surgeries generally incur a higher cost. Combining your facelift with other procedures may also impact the overall investment. At Vegas Facial Plastics, our patients receive 5-star care—often at a fraction of what a similar surgery and experience would cost in Beverly Hills or Manhattan, NYC.

Facial plastic surgeons with advanced training and a proven track record often command higher fees—and with good reason. They consistently deliver refined, natural-looking results, offer a more elevated patient experience, and significantly minimize the risk of surgical complications. When you choose a highly experienced specialist like Dr. Sina, you’re investing in expert care, aesthetic excellence, and peace of mind. After your consultation, you will receive a custom quote tailored to your facelift goals and needs.

How do I know which procedures to combine with my facelift?

At your consultation, Dr. Sina will take a close look at your face, your skin, and what you want to achieve. Some people get amazing results with just a facelift and neck lift, while others might also benefit from eyelid surgery or a little laser resurfacing to really freshen things up and bring the whole look together.

Facelift FAQs

Will a facelift make my face look stiff or unnatural?

A facelift by Dr. Sina focuses on precision and artistry, ensuring your face moves naturally while looking refreshed, lifted, and harmonious.

Can a facelift improve jowling around the mouth?

Yes. Facelift techniques reposition tissue in the lower face, reducing the appearance of jowls for a more youthful appearance.

Will a facelift smooth deep nasolabial folds?

A facelift can lift and tighten the mid-face, softening deep smile lines, but in some cases, a touch of filler is recommended to achieve the best, most balanced result.

What are the limitations of a facelift, and what can't it fix?

A facelift focuses entirely on the lower two-thirds of your face. Think jowls, jawline, and neck. It won't fix a heavy forehead, sagging brows, or tired eyes. Because of this, many patients choose a combined facelift. Dr. Sina often pairs a facelift with a brow lift or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to refresh the upper face at the same time.

What should I avoid during facelift recovery?

During recovery, it's crucial to avoid activities that can increase blood pressure, such as heavy lifting, bending over, and vigorous exercise. Additionally, refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol, as they can impede the healing process.

What sleeping positions are best post-facelift?

Sleeping on your back with your head slightly elevated helps reduce swelling and protects your incisions during the early recovery phase.
