What Does a Facelift Do?

A facelift (rhytidectomy) goes beyond surface-level tightening by lifting and reshaping the foundational layers of the face, resulting in smoother, firmer features and a rejuvenated overall look. While often thought of as a way to tighten skin, modern facelifts—especially the deep plane technique—go beyond surface-level changes to address deeper tissue laxity. Not all facelifts are created equal. In order to reverse the signs of aging, a surgeon must first understand the aging process itself. Aging causes changes to the skin, superficial fat compartments, the muscles of the face, the deep fat compartments, and even the facial skeleton. The extended deep plane facelift is the only technique that allows a surgeon to address and reverse these changes in a natural and long-lasting way.

The difference between traditional facelifts, sometimes referred to as SMAS facelifts and an extended deep plane facelift is that traditional facelifts rely on tension or pulling, either of the facial skin, muscles, or both in order to “lift” the sagging tissues of the face. Many times, this can lead to an overly pulled, windswept or clearly operated on appearance. Additionally, these inferior techniques can distort or change the appearance of other facial features, namely the eyes and mouth. In contrast, the extended deep plane facelift fully releases and repositions the deeper tissues of the face to a more youthful position without tension on the facial skin or muscles. The Facelift Procedure Overview
