What Are My Rhinoplasty Options?

Primary rhinoplasty is divided into two types: cosmetic and functional. Revision rhinoplasty is reserved for patients seeking to fix previous undesireable results.

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

This is what most people think of when they think of a nose job; cosmetic rhinoplasty addresses aesthetic issues such as a wide nasal tip or a misshapen nose. Some patients may have a crooked or misshapen nose that they wish to straighten. More commonly, patients want to reduce the size of their nose, seeking treatment to the bridge, tip, or nostrils.

Functional Rhinoplasty

Functional rhinoplasty aims to improve the patient’s breathing, either through correcting a deviated septum (misaligned cartilage), correcting nasal valve collapse, or through turbinate reduction, which removes tissue from the internal nasal cavity to allow more airflow. How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Your Consultation

The rhinoplasty consultation is a crucial part of the plastic surgery process—in some ways, it’s as important as the surgery itself. During the rhinoplasty consultation, the patient will establish his or her goals by discussing with Dr. Sina exactly what their concerns are and whether they are functional, cosmetic, or both. As mentioned, Dr. Sina isn’t there to tell you what he thinks will look best for you—he will provide you with advice as to what technique may get you closer to your goals or if your desired outcome is even within reach. He will work with you to explain what you can reasonably expect from your rhinoplasty results, as well as the risks and benefits of this procedure.

The patient will then receive a full nasal examination, including the structures inside of the nose (septum, turbinates). The information collected during this comprehensive examination is unique to each patient, and they will help Dr. Sina create a custom, one-of-one surgical plan designed in consideration of each patient’s aesthetic goals.

Another important component of the rhinoplasty consultation is to take high quality medical photographs and use nasal morphing software to mimic what the patient’s desired changes would look like and to make sure that the patient and surgeon are on the exact same page. The morphed images are used as a blueprint during surgery to make sure that the surgical plan is followed precisely.

Lastly, Dr. Sina considers the consultation as the best opportunity to help educate his patients. Too many times, patients will have surgery without an adequate understanding of the surgical process, and this is a leading cause of poor outcomes and low patient satisfaction. When you are in a consultation with Dr. Sina, he encourages you to ask as many questions as you have. If time becomes a constraint, patients are invited to come back for as many follow-up consultations as necessary until they feel comfortable with the entire surgical process.

Be sure to be honest with Dr. Sina; he will be equally honest with you. If you agree that this procedure is ideal for you, he will walk you through the surgical plan and the recovery period before providing you with a cost estimate.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Each rhinoplasty surgery will be uniquely planned to meet the patient’s specific goals as determined and set by the patient and Dr. Sina during the consultation. Dr. Sina does not use a generalized, cookie-cutter treatment plan that makes everyone’s nose look the same.

On the day of surgery, Dr. Sina will meet with his patients prior to surgery to review the surgical plan, including the morphed photos, for the final time. This step ensures that he and his patients are on the exact same page prior to surgery. Dr. Sina prefers to perform rhinoplasty surgery using general anesthesia and an open rhinoplasty technique.

  • In an open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the skin between the nostrils (the columella), allowing Dr. Sina to gain the best view of the nasal anatomy.
  • The next step is typically a septoplasty, where breathing issues are corrected, and vital cartilage is harvested for the cosmetic portion of the rhinoplasty.
  • Next, Dr. Sina begins reshaping the nose. Bone and cartilage may be reduced, reshaped, or repositioned to help achieve the patient’s cosmetic goals. The cartilage harvested during the previous step is the primary source for the cartilage grafts needed to reshape and support the nose during rhinoplasty.
  • Once Dr. Sina is satisfied with the on-the-table result of the rhinoplasty, he carefully closes the incisions and casts the nose.

What Is Rhinoplasty Recovery Like?

After your nose job in Las Vegas with Dr. Sina, your nose will have a nasal splint on it, which helps support your healing nose and maintain its new shape. There will be both dissolvable sutures (inside the nose) and non-dissolvable sutures (columella) in place. The nasal splint and the non-dissolvable sutures are removed a week after surgery. Most patients will not need nasal packing, but in some cases where light packing is used, it is removed the next day.

Dr. Sina will provide you with specific instructions—be sure to follow these as closely as possible. With advances in surgical technique and Dr. Sina’s expert hand, most rhinoplasty patients have minimal bruising, even around the eyes. You should be able to return to work after about a week, with restrictions on strenuous exercise for up to three weeks.

When Will I See My Rhinoplasty Results?

Generally speaking, the final results of a primary rhinoplasty are determined at 12 months. However, most people appreciate an improvement in the appearance of their nose as early as one week when the cast is removed. Nearly all patients return to school or work within one week. The typical recovery timeline is approximately:

  • 70% healed at one month
  • 80% healed at three months
  • 90% healed at six months
  • 99% healed at one year

It is important to remember that patients’ noses will look wonderful much earlier than the one-year mark. Most of Dr. Sina’s “after pictures” for rhinoplasty are taken at three months.
